Through My Eyes: Why The Big Give by RVA Women (and My Mom) Inspired Me

By Morgan Rhudy, age 11

Impact 100 Richmond is a nonprofit that gives 100 plus women in the RVA area the chance to make a true difference.

Once a year, each Impact 100 woman donates $1,000 to a fund to make a combined fund of $100,000. The Big Give is a very exciting and inspiring night. For one thing, I got to see all of the hard work that my mom and the other ladies had done to make everything possible.

As the winner of the 2013 $100,000 grant, YWCA of Richmond plans to launch the Rapid Rehousing Transformation project to help get victims into private spaces to help with recovery.

About the finalists

Morgan met WRIC-TV's anchor Amy Lacey, who volunteered as the emcee for The Big Give in May.This year, the finalists fell under the four categories of education, environment, family, and health & wellness (the category for YWCA). Under education, there was a nonprofit called Positive Vibe that teaches people with special needs the skills on how to get a job in the food business.

For environment, Project: Homes provides much needed house repairs and renovations for low income and disabled people. In the category of family, Coordinators2inc gives education and placement to adoptive families.

Art 180, the 2012 winner of the grant, helps underprivileged people find a way through art. The used the money by making a new building so that the art is more enjoyable to all, and they give classes and workshops for all ages!

I believe the Impact 100 is doing a great thing in this community, and helping so many people! That night, I got to learn about so many good things going on in the Richmond. I am so inspired by all of these women and their impact in the RVA community.

Keep up the great work!
