For many Richmond-area children, the weekend does not mean a welcome break from school. Rather, it is an unfortunate and belly-aching 48 hours until Monday morning and their next meal at school.
Many children go home Fridays and wait for a school breakfast on Monday morning to eat their next meal.
Backpacks of Love is a nonprofit founded in 2011 serving children in rural Powhatan County, Va., by providing simple, yet nutritious foods for the weekend.
Volunteers carefully select foods that can eaten cold, as some of the Powhatan children have no refrigeration or heating in their homes. School administrators discretely distribute the food to the children in need. Currently, Backpacks of Love is able to provide food for just the child in need and not their entire family.
How we helped
In the fall of 2011, Rhudy & Co. volunteered its services to design a logo for Backpacks of Love to help draw visibility among potential community donors.
Helping other hungry children in Richmond
In 2011, Rhudy & Co. supported a similar community initiative serving Richmond-area kids with our contribution of time and dollars as part of Impact 100 Richmond, a “women’s giving circle” or collective giving initiative.
In May 2011, Communities In Schools of Richmond, Inc. received a "Big Give" $100,000 grant to double the number of children in Richmond’s East End who receive backpacks with a weekend full of nutritious meals. The Richmond nonprofit is working with FeedMore to help some of Richmond’s chronically hungry children.
